Restaurants

This is the name to drop when you get back home. Gundel is arguably the only restaurant in Budapest with an international reputation. Established in 1894 it offers old magnificence and an out of the ordinary dining experience!

gundel-restaurantGundel Story Once upon a time there was a fairy palace in the heart a Várolsiget, the City Park in Budapest. It came to pass between these walls that Károly Gundel, one of the great restaurateurs of Europe, recreated local gastronomy. Long and tumultuous decades later, world famous restaurateur George Lang came along in 1992 to awaken the Sleeping Beauty and create an unrivaled dining experience. Guests enjoy classical, fin-de-siécle elegance while experiencing magnificent culinary delights. Over the years Gundel has evolved into a palace of style and arts. Inaugurated in 1894, the building today is a place to relish delicacies from the kitchen, garnished with treasures of architecture, painting and music.
Our à la carte restaurant, adorned by masterpieces from the greatest Hungarian painters, is the perfect spot to relax and be submerged in the almosphere of balcyon days accompanied by the music of a virtuoso gypsy ensemble. Our cooks and pastry chefs reinvest traditional Gundel recipes to create veritable works of art in food, which have pleased the taste of such dignitaries as Her Maesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
Our Bar is well worth a visit during the day for a taste of the famous Gundel pancake, a peaceful afternoon coffee, an inspiring cocktail in the evening or simply to have a chat with a nice cigar after dinner:
Our banquet rooms offer you inexbaustible options for bolding events, from secluded meetings to festive balls.
Our wine cellar invites you to sample some of the award-winning wines of the lauder-Láng winery. Alternately, you can even enjoy a seven-course feast of winning and dining. Shaded by ancient trees, our garden is the ideal location for a light luncheon or an elegant candle-lit dinner.
Gundel also provides off-premises catering. Today Gundel has grown from providing the finest hospitality for the VIP guests of Budapest’s leading companies into Budapest’s most sought after catering company with a world-wide reputation for styling, excellent food, exciting party design and professional staff.

gundel-logoFEW WORDS ABOUT THE BUILDING Gundel Restaurant is known throughout Europe for its venerable history, elegant interiors and fine cuisine.  The palazzo-restaurant is situated in Városliget – Budapest’s City Park, between the City Zoo and Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere).
Following the plans of architect Ervin Bauer in the characteristic eclectic style of the turn-of-the-century, the main building of Gundel Restaurant was constructed in 1894. The owners had a private flat above the dining room on the main floor.

THE CUISINE AND THE WINES OF THE NEW GUNDEL To make Gundel one of Europe’s best and most elegant restaurants once again, we carefully combine the traditions with a certain measure of present trends. The basis is the traditional Hungarian cuisine reviving special traditional dishes out of the Central European aristocracy and other cuisines of the world.
The à la carte selection includes Gundel classics (Filet of Fogash with ragout of Crayfish à la Gundel), remarkable dishes from the past (Cabbage  baked with Catfish and Fish Sausage – an 18th century recipe), variations on the incomparable Hungarian Goose Liver, live fish from our tank, samples from today’s Gundel (Tournedos Franz Liszt borrowed from his colleague, Signor Rossini), a Hungarian pot au feu in two acts, old-fashioned hand-pulled Strudel, fruits, ice creams made in our ice cream workshop and coffees of many flavors.

We bought them after a careful selection, and we store them in a wine cellar, which was owned by Eugene Prince of Savoy during the 18th century. We also offer our guests a choice of French, German, Spanish and Italian wines, champagnes and other beverages, an unusual selection of Hungarian fruit brandies including Gundel apricot brandy and Tokaji wine from our own vineyard in Mád, and Plum and William Pear brandies, distilled specially for Gundel.

GYÖRGY LAKATOS AND HIS GYPSY ORCHESTRA The seven-man orchestra consist of prímás Lakatos, a cimbalom, a cello, a contra-bass, a violin and a clarinet player. The repertoire varies from authentic gypsy tunes and Hungarian folk songs through interpretations of Liszt, Brahms and Kodály, the operetta music of Lehár and Kálmán all the popular music of the western world.
